BOOK OSCAR GRANT JR. FOR YOUR NEXT EVENT

SPEAKING ON STAGE

“The system didn’t just take my freedom. It took my chance to be a father to my son. But today I’m fighting so no other family has to experience that pain.”

A Story of Loss, Justice, and Rebuilding Families After Incarceration

For 35 years, Oscar Grant Jr. lived behind prison walls. While he was serving a life sentence, his son, Oscar Grant III, was killed by a BART police officer at Fruitvale Station in Oakland. Oscar learned about his son’s death from inside a prison cell. He never had the chance to raise him, protect him, or guide him into adulthood.

That pain could have broken him. Instead, it became the foundation for a movement. Today, after his life sentence was overturned, Oscar Grant Jr. travels the country speaking about justice, fatherhood, incarceration, and rebuilding communities harmed by the criminal justice system. His message is not just about tragedy. It is about resilience, accountability, and building a better future for the next generation.

Through his lived experiences, Oscar Grant Jr. tells a story of unimaginable loss, unwavering resilience, and the fight to rebuild families torn apart by incarceration.

WHY OSCAR GRANT JR.?

The Story That Moves Audiences

Oscar’s story is one that audiences never forget.

Sentenced to life in prison before his son was born, Oscar spent decades fighting for his freedom. During those years, he watched from behind bars as his son grew up without a father.

Then tragedy struck.

On New Year’s Day 2009, his son Oscar Grant III was shot and killed by a BART police officer at Fruitvale Station. The killing sparked national outrage and became a defining moment in the modern conversation around police accountability.

Oscar was forced to grieve the loss of his son while still incarcerated.

He could not attend the funeral.
He could not comfort his family.
He could not hold his child one last time.

After serving 35 years in prison, Oscar’s life sentence was finally overturned. When he walked free, he made a promise to dedicate the rest of his life to ensuring other families would not endure the same cycle of incarceration, separation, and loss.

Oscar founded The Two Lives of Oscar Grant Foundation to transform personal tragedy into real policy solutions.
